Lesson 1 - Patterns with Multiple Attributes

To encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about Patterns with Multiple Attributes, here are some games and interactive activities they can do on their own or in pairs.

What Does a Pattern Sound Like? prompts students to pick a sound pattern they can hear and see. Builds problems solving skills. � Some students would benefit from working with a partner.

To use What Does a Pattern Sound Like, click on the yellow squares to hear the pattern. Click the 'Next' button to hear and see more complicated patterns. Each horizontal row is a different instrument. Click on any of the squares to turn a sound on, click on the square again and sound turns off. Click on the 'Funky Pattern' buttons to hear pre-made patterns. The 'More Sounds' button loads new sounds into the player. Click the 'Erase All' button to clear all patterns. Have students create new patterns.

 

Marbles on a Chain is an interactive program that prompts students to fill in five colours in the pattern sequence.

To use, Marbles in a Chain, click on the 'Chain of Beads' icon. Five marbles repeat a pattern on the chain. The 102nd marble must be blue.

Click on a marble to add it to the chain. Select your pattern for the 5 marbles. Click 'Finish the Chain'. If the 102 nd marble is not blue, choose a different pattern sequence for the 5 marbles and repeat the activity.
