Lesson 1 - Using Doubling to Multiply

To encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about Using Doubling to Multiply, here are some games and interactive activities they can do on their own or in pairs.

Instructions for Use

Number Relationships prompts students to use repeated addition.

To use Number Relationships, skip-count by twos, start by pressing the number 2 on the interactive calculator. This number will appear in the calculator window. Press the + button on the calculator, the number 2 becomes shaded on the hundreds board. Press the number 2 again and the = button on the calculator. Keep pressing the = button to show the relationship of repeated addition and doubling to multiplying.

 

Double the Donuts helps students visualize a doubling strategy.

To use Double the Donuts, click on the 'Double It' button to see how the number of donuts increases. Notice the chart at the right of the program to see how quickly the number of donuts double.

 

Archery Doubles helps students multiply using a doubling strategy.

To use Archery Doubles, double the number on the board, and click on the correct part of the target.
