THE TOWNS AND VILLAGES OF ONTARIO

INTRODUCTION

Many cities in Ontario such as Toronto, Ottawa, Windsor and Sudbury have very large populations. Most people in Ontario know where these large cities can be found on a map of the province. However, there are many towns and villages in Ontario that have small populations. These towns and villages are often not well known, even by the people who live nearby, and it is sometimes difficult to find them on a map when you are traveling

THE TASK

The Find-your-Way Map Company has decided to create a map of your county in Ontario that will tell about our small towns and villages. They want to show many of these small places on the map, along with their populations.

You have been asked to investigate the population of 10 towns and 10 villages and then find out where they should be marked on the map. You will then recommend 10 of these to be placed on the map. Give reasons for your choices.

THE PROCESS

  1. Use the Canadian Statistics website Population Counts for Canada, Provinces and Territories . Find and click the + next to the county that you live (e.g. Sudbury District). You may need to click to page 2 to find the county you are interested in. This will take you to a page that gives the names and the populations of all small towns and villages in the county.
  2. Enter the names and the exact populations of at least 15 to 20 places, if possible, on the Populations of Ontario Towns & Villages recording sheet. Be sure to place each in the correct column, with the towns listed in order of size, from the smallest population to the largest population.
  3. Find and print a map of your county from the Reference Maps site. Choose 10 villages or small towns to place in the correct place on your blank map. Write the population in brackets after the name.
  4. Be sure that you can explain why you chose these towns and villages.
